Mist propagation creates the perfect environment for nurturing young plants. However, it’s also the perfect environment disease and algae. Phyton Corporation’s X3 disinfectant delivers powerful disease control in mist systems without damaging delicate cuttings or roots.
Mist propagation provides ideal moisture conditions for many young plants to thrive. However, when left untreated, mist propagation provides the ideal conditions for disease to thrive, too. Growers need a reliable disinfectant that will control algae and pathogens in water lines without sacrificing plant health.
Phyton Corporation’s X3 disinfectant is an excellent choice to control diseases during this delicate step in production. It’s tough on pathogens and algae while staying exceptionally safe for cuttings and seedlings. Let’s take a look at a few case uses of X3 and how it improved disease control without sacrificing plant growth.
Disease Control During Mist Propagation of Hypericum
When X3 was injected in the mist propagation system for greenhouse-grown hypericum cuttings, the cuttings had significantly less rust pustules than cuttings under untreated mist. In this trial, the cuttings were kept under mist conditions of 1 minute per hour for 12 hours per day. X3 was injected into the mist system at a rate of 2.6 ounces per 100 gallons, or 1:5000. As the pictures below prove, the cuttings treated with X3 had significantly less evidence of rust.

Healthier, Stronger Roots with X3
In the same hypericum trial, Phyton also looked at the propagation material and roots of the cuttings. The trial found injecting X3 into the mist propagation system produced healthier, stronger roots when compared to a popular bactericide and fungicide.
The roots of the cuttings treated with X3 were just as robust as untreated water. However, the cuttings treated with the popular bactericide and fungicide almost stopped rooting. The trial showed that treating mist propagation water with X3 did not affect root growth while protecting the plants from disease.

Algae Control During Mist Propagation with X3
Algae growth on plug and cutting liners can cause trouble for plants. Treating your mist lines with X3 can help you control algae in your liners. Phyton trialed X3 for algae control on coleonema pots kept under mist conditions of 1 minute per hour for 12 hours a day. After one week of treating mist lines with 2.6 ounces of X3 per 100 gallons of water, the percentage of pots with algae plummeted from 80+ percent of pots misted with untreated water to just over 20 percent misted with X3-treated water.

X3 Protects Without Damage
Competing disinfectants may also control disease, but can they do it without damaging your plants and hindering their growth? One study comparing X3 with a popular bactericide and fungicide found a significant different in propagation success of snapdragon plugs. While the plugs misted with water treated with X3 had comparable growth to water alone, the plugs treated with the other product suffered. Some plugs failed to develop, and those that did were leggy and less robust than the X3-treated plants.

Mist propagation is a delicate step in the plant propagation process. You need a disinfectant you can trust to keep your water lines clean without hindering the growth of your plants.

Mist Propagation FAQs
Why is disease control important during mist propagation?
The constant moisture and humidity in mist propagation systems create ideal conditions for pathogens like fungi and bacteria to thrive, making water sanitation critical for healthy plant growth.
How does X3 work in mist propagation systems?
X3 is injected into mist or irrigation lines, where it disinfects water, controls algae, and eliminates disease-causing pathogens all while remaining safe for tender seedlings and cuttings.
Does X3 affect root or plant development?
No. Trials showed that X3-treated plants developed strong, healthy roots comparable to untreated water, unlike some competing products that hindered rooting or caused plant stress.
Can X3 help reduce algae buildup?
Yes. In greenhouse trials, X3 reduced algae presence from over 80% to just 20% of treated pots, keeping plug trays and liners cleaner and healthier.
